PortSide NewYork spent a week doing what we do so well: promoting ships and waterfront events and generating buzz.
We stepped up to do this on behalf of OpSail 2012. Here's the skinny: 10 ships open to the public! Memorial Day Weekend! Red Hook Marine Terminal, Brooklyn!

PortSide seeks a new home where we can deliver our magic PortSide runs programs on and off the MARY A. WHALEN the only oil tanker in the world hosting public programs. Over the course of six years, we have turned the tanker into a people magnet and created diverse and innovative waterfront programs on and off the ship. The ship has been docked most of that time in the Red Hook container port where public access is severely limited, which has obliged us to continually negotiate permits to visit other piers; and permits are slow and tough to get in NYC. (re: permits, see our petition at right.) We have operated as a cultural pop-up for 6+ years and demonstrated what we can do, all while looking for a homeport. PortSide now URGENTLY need a stable base of operations to blossom and be sustainable as an organization. Would you like to have a dynamic educational and cultural institution floating on your waterfront? Call us. Come talk to us. As of 4/14/12, we have an office and mini-museum off the ship, a storefront at 145 Columbia Street, Brooklyn, NY 11231. You can help PortSide by donating now to sustain us during real estate negotiations until we can return to programming. PortSide is eager to have a real home so we can better serve the public. Our ability to raise money for programs and earn money with the Mary A. Whalen has been limited by the lack of a publicly-accessible place for the ship. (More on that here). We need a home confirmed soon or we will close as we cannot keep popping up forever. If we close, the Mary A. Whalen would likely be scrapped as there are few commercial uses for her.
